The 93rd Oscars are only six days away now, and the excitement is in the air! It's the biggest night in Hollywood, where the most acclaimed films of the year get honored in the biggest award show out there. Here's everything you need to know ahead of the big night!
An Oscars Unlike Any Other
2020 was a year like no other, so it's only fitting we get an Oscars like no other to boot. The ceremony will be held in person, with Zoom attendance not being an option. The event will be limited to hosts, presenters, nominees, and their guests.
Dave Rubin, the Academy President, announced the details for the big night.
"I'm delighted to share that this year's Oscars ceremony will take place April 25th, at both LA's historic Union Station, and the landmark Dolby Theatre"
No Host Once Again
Amid the controversy surrounding Kevin Hart's ousting as host, the show opted to go without a master of ceremony the last time the awards were held. This year will follow suit, with no host to kick things off.
No Zoom Allowed
After technical glitches and low ratings bogged down earlier awards shows, the Academy stated "if you can't be in person, you can't come at all", but given the need for some nominees and attendees to travel internationally to attend, there are now two more virtual venues set up in London and Paris for those in Europe.
But enough semantics, let's get into the good stuff: who's up for a trophy?
The Netflix film Mank is up for ten awards, but after having a similar amount of Golden Globe nominations and zero wins, it's understandable if Gary Oldman and crew are feeling the heat as we get closer to Sunday.
Minari follows in second with six nominations, including Walking Dead star Steven Yeun, who's made history as the first Asian American to receive a nomination for Best Actor. He's up against, among others, Riz Ahmed, the first Muslim man to receive a nomination. Ahmed's film, The Sound of Metal, is also up for six awards.
Judas and the Black Messiah, also with six nods, has made history as the only all black production team to ever be nominated for Best Picture.
It's going to be a wild night, with no clear winners in sight, so stay tuned for the biggest night in Hollywood!
