AMC To Reopen 25 Theaters In LA County This Week

After nearly a year of shuttered windows due to the COVID-19 pandemic, AMC is reopening 25 theaters in Los Angeles County this week. Their flagship Santa Monica and Burbank locations are already open, with the other 23 locations slated to open their doors the 19th.

A Promising Start

LA County, given their recent plunge in cases and rise in vaccination rate, has finally moved into their "red tier" phase of reopening, which will allow movie theaters, museums, and indoor dining in the city for the first time since the virus shut everything down.

Of course, we still have to see if this leads to a rise in cases, but with vaccination rates on the rise and the general mask-wearing attitude of the area, things look promising for this to be a seamless transition.

Finally, a Break

AMC has had a rough go of it this year, having to shelter all 525 of their nationwide locations over the past year. Of course, there was their massive stock inflation, but that was a result of an expectation for the company to go under.

This will be a big test for the theater industry in a massive market. We get to see if movie theaters will, in fact, survive post-coronavirus. The movie distribution space has changed massively in the last year, with the vast majority of 2020's films going direct to streamer in conjunction with limited theater release.

Time will tell if that was a permanent setback or a bump in the road, but now, we get to find out.
