Just months after their engagement on the Bachelor in Paradise finale of season 7, Maurissa Gunn and Riley Christian have split.


A statement to PEOPLE was given from the couple, saying,

"We have decided to go our separate ways. Never did we imagine this, but we've come to a point where we both need to work on ourselves. We've appreciated everyone's love and support so far throughout our journey and we just ask that you please respect our privacy as we navigate through this."

Gunn and Christian ended up doing a long-distance relationship with Gunn trying to get out of Atlanta for good, so she could live with Christian in New York City. Rumors, though, began to spark once Bachelor Nation caught Gunn deleting Instagram photos of the couple off of her account.

Another hint at the couple breaking up was when Gunn posted a video of herself posing in the mirror without her Neil Lane engagement ring. Her sister even sent Edible Arrangements to her, which inclined Gunn to post on her story with the card saying "amazing person." The last cryptic hint from Gunn's side was a photo quoted "all that glitters is not gold".

The back and forth wouldn't stop there, as Christian tweeted,

In his most recent tweet, he said,

Although the love didn't last, Gunn and Christian did make history by becoming the first Black couple in the Bachelor in Paradise franchise to get engaged.
