Former Bachelor Colton Underwood took to Good Morning America this morning to share his truth: that he is gay.

Underwood sat down with Robin Roberts this morning to share his news in the interview. "There is something that you want people to know, so can you tell us what is on your heart that you want to share?" to that, Underwood responded "I'm gay. And I came to terms with that earlier this year and have been processing it."

The announcement comes two years after Underwood's season as the Bachelor in 2019. Colton left his season with Cassie Randolph, and the two decided to continue their relationship off-screen, refraining from an engagement. In May of 2020, the couple announced their breakup after enduring COVID-19 together and having to quarantine. At the time, Underwood commented that "Some people are just meant to be friends."

Underwood also admitted that his love for Cassie was genuine, and apologized for not "fixing [himself] before [he] broke anybody else."

"I loved everything about her and it's hard for me to articulate exactly what my emotions were in going through that relationship with her was because I obviously had an internal fight going on," Underwood told Roberts. "I would just say that I'm sorry from the bottom of my heart. I'm sorry for any pain and emotional stress I caused. I wish that it wouldn't have happened the way that it did."

Underwood also got vulnerable about his mental health through coming to terms with his sexuality, sharing that he oftentimes had suicidal thoughts. "I would have rather died than say I'm gay, and I think that was sort of my wake-up call"

With that said, Roberts noted that through the pain she could also see the joy Underwood is feeling. "I mean I'm emotional but I'm emotional in... such a good, happy, positive way. I'm like the happiest and healthiest I have ever been in my life, and that means the world to me."
