Britney Spears' 'Crossroads' Film Turns 20!

Director of the romantic comedy Tamra Davis reflects on working with pop-icon Britney Spears during the film.

In 2002, the romantic comedy Crossroads hit theaters. The film starred Britney Spears, Taryn Manning, Zoe Saldana, and Anson Mount. The film's director, Tamra Davis, had a recent interview with Variety reflecting on what it was like to work with Spears for her first feature film.

Davis reflected on Spears' impact on the film and the relationships she formed along the way:

"She really was at the height of her career, and she also was with Justin [Timberlake] at that time, and so, she was living this very fantastical life, but it was a lot of pressure and it was very big. I think what happened to her while we were shooting was very magical because when you’re working on a movie, you develop a small community and she had this incredible camaraderie with Zoe [Saldana] and Taryn [Manning] and Anson [Mount]."

The film's budget was extremely low, and Davis commented on how Spears loved the fact that it was a low budget film for such a famous star like herself:

"I think she loved it. I think there was probably more money in the music than there was in the film. But I also think it took some of the pressure off. We wanted to make this cool, indie, road trip chick flick and not try to be all polished and puffy."

Davis mentioned to Variety that she has not been in recent contact with Spears, and when she tried to get in touch with her in the recent past, she was rejected by Spears' team, which Davis assumes was her team trying to silence Spears during her conservatorship.

Davis said to Variety:

“It just breaks my heart because when I think back to the messages that I was getting back, they never let me get to her. Now, I just realized, oh my god, this was her people just trying to keep everybody away. I feel there were voices that could have helped her.”

According the IMDb, the film is about:

"Three childhood best friends, and a guy they just met, take a road trip across the country, finding themselves and their friendship in the process."

Writer of the film, Shonda Rhimes (Scandal, Grey's Anatomy), shared this recent post on Instagram:
