The Film Independent Spirit Awards will take place on April 24th, 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, the Film Independent Spirit Awards have announced they are pushing back their date to April 24th, 2021 to keep the tradition alive of being held the day before the Oscars.

The postponement of the event isn't the best news for film lovers, but the change of date will allow for films that were released earlier this year until next February. Film Independent president Josh Welsh explained:

"Additionally, we will recognize films that were released between January 1, 2020 and February 28, 2021 in acknowledgement of the unique challenges the world of cinema, and the world as a whole, is currently experiencing."

The event showcases the top talent throughout the world of independent films. Films can be nominated for categories such as Best Feature, Best Screenplay, and the John Cassavetes Award and the Robert Altman Award. The variety of categories and nominations allows films that would not normally be recognized in other award show formats.
