Though the event happened years ago, Clooney retold the story in a recent interview with GQ Magazine.
Clooney's rise to fame didn't come without hardships. While beginning his career, the now Hollywood superstar had found himself broke and couch surfing just to get by.
His lifestyle did a complete 180 following his success and sudden financial boom. In 2013, his pockets were overflowing with the surprising success of the film Gravity, which co-starred Sandra Bullock. He decided to celebrate by giving back to those who had helped him in the past.
Clooney chose 14 of his closest friends and gifted them each a bag filled with one million dollars cash.
The actor explained why he did what he did:
"And I thought, what I do have are these guys who've all, over a period of 35 years, helped me in one way or another. I've slept on their couches when I was broke. They loaned me money when I was broke. They helped me when I needed help over the years. And I've helped them over the years. We're all good friends. And I thought, you know, without them I don't have any of this.
He also revealed those friends of his were already in his will. Rather than waiting until it was too late, he wanted them to enjoy it now.
"And we're all really close, and I just thought basically if I get hit by a bus, they're all in the will. So why am I waiting to get hit by a bus?"
Many twitter users were shocked to hear someone do such a thing. For Clooney, it just made sense:
"I remember talking to one really rich a**hole who I ran into in a hotel in Vegas—certainly a lot richer than I am. And I remember the story about the cash had come out, and he was like, 'Why would you do that?' And I was like, 'Why wouldn't you do that, you schmuck?' "
According to Clooney, a million dollars cash surprisingly isn't too heavy.
Twitter poked fun at Clooney's friends and reacted to the story:
