Jane Campion, director of the award-winning western drama, "The Power of the Dog," has finally responded to actor Sam Elliott's criticisms of the film, which he harshly regarded as a "piece of s--t."

Elliott appeared on the "WTF with Marc Maron" podcast last month and had nothing but scathing reviews for the director and her film.

The acting vet disapproved of the "allusions of homosexuality throughout the movie," and also questioned Campion's credentials to do a western film as a New Zealander, saying,

"What the f--k does this woman from down there, New Zealand, know about the American West?"

Campion, who spoke to Variety at the Directors Guild of America Awards on Saturday March 12, called Elliot's remarks "sexist."

She shared,

“I’m sorry, he was being a little bit of a B-I-T-C-H. He’s not a cowboy; he’s an actor... The West is a mythic space and there’s a lot of room on the range. I think it’s a little bit sexist.”

Jesse Plemons, along with his wife and co-star in the film, Kirsten Dunst, responded to Elliott's comments.

On March 11, Plemons spoke to The Hollywood Reporter before a screening of his new film "Windfall" and his reaction probably isn't what you would expect.

The actor revealed hearing Elliott's remarks actually made him laugh.

“I don’t know why I reacted this way, but — I’m not going to say it made me happy, but it made me laugh. I don’t know," said Plemons. "People can have their own opinions about something. I know there are different layers to that… but not everyone has to like it.”

Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays Phil Burbank in the film, spoke out about Elliott's surprising comments at a BAFTA Film Sessions event on March 4.

The film, which has certainly earned its reputation as a powerhouse, has impressively garnered 12 Oscar nominations, including best picture and best director.

Additionally, the critically acclaimed film recently took home awards for best picture at the 2022 BAFTA and Critics Choice Awards.

Find out how Campion's film fares at the Oscars on March 27 on ABC.
