Netflix Wins Battle for Rights of New Lee Daniels Film

Seven bidders fought for the rights to Lee Daniels new exorcism-thriller film.

Lee Daniels, director of films such as The Butler and The United States vs. Billie Holiday, is going to be directing a new film set to begin production by the middle of 2022, according to Deadline.

The film will have an ensemble cast, including stars Andra Day, Octavia Spencer, Glenn Close, Rob Morgan, Aunjanue Ellis, and Caleb McLaughlin.

Day is reportedly going to be playing a mother of a family in Indiana whose children become possessed by some sort of demon. The new thriller is said to be inspired by a real-life case.

Netflix bought the package film, including the budget and buyouts, for around $65 million dollars.

The film will be produced by Daniels alongside Tucker Tooley and Pam Williams.

According to Deadline, the summary of the case can be found below:

"In a case widely covered at the time, Latoya Ammons and her three children experienced strange incidents in their Gary, IN, home that grew progressively worse, with the children levitating, becoming violent with one another and speaking in growls and deep voices with no recollection afterward. Skeptics abounded, but the Gary Police Department, Department of Child Services and the local church and hospital all became involved, filing reports that took the supernatural occurrences seriously. Officers, doctors and social workers said they witnessed many of the incidents, including one in which her 9-year-old son walked backward up a wall. The Indianapolis Star covered it closely as the Department of Child Services investigated it."
