In honor of one of the most influential individuals to ever walk, Congress designated the third Monday of January every year as MLK Day, where individuals are encouraged to act in service and help their fellow humans. Despite the pandemic, organizations are still using today to help those affected by Covid-19.

We Must Be in Service to One Another

Martin Luther King Jr. once said,

"If you want to be important, wonderful. If you want to be recognized, wonderful. If you want to be great, wonderful! But recognize that He who is greatest among you shall be your servant."

Since 1994, MLK Day has acted as the national day of service. Every year, organizations across the country help in various ways, performing their acts of service.

Due to Covid-19, this year is a little different. With the pandemic, the focus is on those who've lost their jobs and those who are struggling because of the crisis.

Helping Those in Need

From February 2020 to May 2020 alone, unemployment was raised by more than 14 million. The rise in the number of unemployed individuals due to Covid is more than the Great Recession and comparable to the Great Depression.

So many individuals are in need of service, especially with the conditions of today.

The Concerns of Humanity

All of Martin Luther King Jr.'s children have dedicated their lives to helping the oppressed and spreading the word of service.

Martin Luther King Jr.'s daughter, Bernice A. King, spoke of her father saying,

"My father said an individual has not started to live until he or she can rise above the narrow confines of his or her individual list of concerns to the broader concerns of humanity."

While we may have school or work off, due to this national holiday, let's remember what this day stands for and the mounds of people who fought for a day like this.

There is no such thing as a small act of service, so try to do something for the betterment of others today.
