Lil Nas X Drops Debut Album 'MONTERO'

Lil Nas X

Montero from Lil Nas X is finally here!

Pop sensation Lil Nas X proved he is more than just a one-hit-wonder on his debut album MONTERO.

With 15 tracks, the self-titled album runs for 41 glorious minutes. Lil Nas X laid the groundwork for the highly-anticipated album with singles like 'Montero', 'Industry Baby', and 'Sun Goes Down'. Despite the controversy surrounding the album rollout, the openly gay rapper/singer shook off the haters.

The hit single 'MONTERO' serves as the album's intro track which gives a sneak peek at the subject matter that Lil Nas X is looking to explore over the course of the 15 songs. The intro track is followed by 'Dead Right Now' which features melodic rap verses over a dark and haunting beat that sets the tone for the rest of the album. The third track is the anthemic 'Industry Baby' which was the unofficial song of the summer. On this song, the chemistry between Lil Nas X and Jack Harlow is undeniable. The duo even broke the internet with their live debut of the song at the MTV Video Music Awards this past Sunday.

Then we hear the song that already went viral on TikTok before it was even released officially: 'That's What I Want'. The song, produced by OneRepublic frontman Ryan Tedder, is incredibly infectious with its uptempo guitar instrumental. The music video for this song dropped in tandem with the release of the album. Almost immediately, the video shot to the top ten trending videos on YouTube.

'The Art Of Realization' is a short interlude where Lil Nas X briefly speaks about his mental health. But the momentum of the album doesn't stop for a second. On 'Scoop' Lil Nas X teams up with Doja Cat and the two take turns effortlessly flowing over a trap beat that will leave the song in your head for the whole weekend. One of the album's more intimate moments is 'One Of Me' which features Elton John. The legend doesn't lend his voice to the album, but he does provide a lovely piano sample over which Lil Nas X sings about the struggles that come with his newfound fame.

The melancholy tone continues on 'Lost In The Citadel' which almost sounds like an alternative rock ballad from the early 2000s. It's worth mentioning at this point that Lil Nas X has made it clear that he cannot be pigeon-holed into one genre. That being said, one of the album's most rap-heavy tracks is 'Dolla Sign Slime' featuring Megan Thee Stallion. The instrumentation paired with Lil Nas X's lyrics make this song feel like a sequel to 'Industry Baby'.

On 'Tales Of Dominica' and 'Sun Goes Down' and 'Void', we see Lil Nas X at his most vulnerable with lyrics like: "Hope my little bit of hope don't fade away" and "Send me a gun and I'll see the sun." and "I feel like I've hit a low, one I've never hit before." Here, he explore themes of loneliness, anxiety, and depression. The pace of the album picks back up on the braggadocious 'Don't Want It'.

The penultimate track, 'Life After Salem' features a bare bones beat made of some droning guitar chords and smooth percussion. The rock influences on this track are hard to ignore and Lil Nas X sings his heart out on the chorus. Finally, the album closes out with a ballad called 'Am I Dreaming'. With a lowkey instrumental that evolves over the course of the three minutes and an incredible Miley Cyrus feature, this song is one of the best on the album.

All in all, Montero finds Lil Nas X refusing to be written off as the 'Old Town Road' guy. At midnight on Friday, the Grammy-winner took to Twitter to share a bizarre yet hilarious video that shows him giving birth to the album.

Lil Nas X's debut album is available now Montero wherever you listen to music.
