Rapper Nas Being Sued For Copyright Violation

Rapper Nas Being Sued For Copyright Violation
by Al Pereira

Rapper Nas is being sued after sharing a 1993 photo of himself and Tupac Shakur on his Instagram page.

The suit was filed in the Central District of California on Feb. 2, 2022, by Al Pereira, the photographer who captured the photo. He claims that Nas shared the image without his permission or licensing the work. The black and white picture shows rappers Nas, Pac, and Redman outside of Club Amazon.

Court documents state that Nas re-shared the photo on his Instagram account back in 2020, three years after Pereira registered copyright for it. The photographer claiming that the one of a kind image has diminished its value. Pereira is suing for damages plus an injunction against Nas for using his work.

Pereira isn’t new to suing celebrities about his work. In 2017, he sued Kylie and Kendall Jenner for photos he took of Pac and The Notorious B.I.G. that they were trying to use as a part of a t-shirt to sell on their site.

The apparel was removed, but Pereira was countersued by Kendall for $22,000 to cover legal costs citing the lawsuit as “frivolous.” Pereira has filed over 450 copyright infringement lawsuits since 2015.
