'Once On This Island' Film Adaptation In The Works At Disney Plus

A movie based on the hit Broadway musical Once On This Island is currently in the works at Disney+.


Once On This Island Heads To The Screen

Movie adaptations of Broadway musicals have proven to be successful at Disney+ due to Hamilton getting a roaring applause since it premiered Now, Disney is going tropical and heading under the sea with its adaptation of the hit Broadway musical Once On This Island!

Playbill revealed that playwright Jocelyn Bioh is set to adapt the musical from stage to screen with Marc Platt as a producer. An announcement has not been sent out about casting or the production's agenda.

The History Behind The Hit Musical 

Playbill also dug deep on the show's history. Penned by Seussical: The Musical team Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, the musical is based on Rosa Guy's 1895 novel My Love, My Love (also known as The Peasant Girl). The plot follows Ti Moune as she falls head over heels with a rich man on the other side of their island. Many powerful gods join her on her quest to tear down stereotypes and cultural norms.

After transforming its debut from Off-Broadway to Broadway in 1990, it was later revived in 2017. The show won the 2018 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical, and starred Hailey Kilgore as Ti Moune along with Alex Newell, Lea Salonga, Issac Cole Powell, Merle Dandridge and Quentin Earl Darrington rounding out the cast.
