In this brand new interview, stars Jack Quaid and Tawny Newsome open up about the next season of this animated adventure

Star Trek: Lower Decks is a cartoon comedy from Paramount+ that explores the unglamorous lives of a handful of low-ranking Starfleet employees who work outside of the main bridge on an irrelevant starship. The show's stars, Jack Quaid, Tawny Newsome, Noël Wells (Saturday Night Live, Master of None), and Eugene Cordero (Loki, The Good Place, Kong: Skull Island) recently sat down with Advocate Channel to share a preview of the upcoming second season.

Quaid, a graduate of NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, is famous for his role as Hugh "Hughie" Campbell in Amazon's live-action superhero drama The Boys. But now he's bringing his talents to the animated arena as the voice of Ensign Brad Boimler.

"Our show focuses on the people who work in the bowels of the ship doing the jobs that nobody wants to do, and they have their own kind of world to themselves."

This show is a far cry from The BoysStar Trek's message of peace among worlds and interplanetary cooperation is at odds with the former's themes of corporate cynicism and zestful violence as a cure-all. However, Quaid sees similarities between the two, thanks to their portrayal of heroes who aren't always consistent.

"Weirdly, they're very similar shows: The Boys, in that case, the people are definitely not as heroic as they seem, with our show, I feel like our superheroes on Lower Decks are bridge crew, and they are very heroic in their own ways but they are definitely flawed."

Newsome, who plays rule-breaker Beckett Mariner, also dropped in to offer her thoughts on the "sci-fi anomalies" in the second season.

"Our show just has such a different perspective on it, because, you know, it's normally the bridge crew's job to deal with the major sci-fi happenings, and what are the lower deckers doing while that stuff is happening?"

Wells, the voice of newcomer and medic D'Vana Tendi, also had high praise for the show's appeal to even non-Trekkies.

"I come into the Trek universe as a newbie myself, so I think that that speaks to the universality of the show."

And Eugene Cordero who plays Ensign Samanthan Rutherford, promised something for devoted Star Trek fans and newbies.

"if you know Star Trek awesome, you're gonna enjoy the little easter eggs and moments you might miss or you might be right on top of. But if you're not a fan of Star Trek at all then you'll just enjoy the comradery of it , the friendships that are in it , and the jokes"

Season Two of Star Trek: Lower Decks releases on Thursday, August 12th on Paramount+.
