Stranger Things' Noah Schnapp Confirms Will Is Gay

After much speculation by fans, Stranger Thing’s Noah Schnapp has confirmed his character’s queerness.

The young actor told Variety that Will is gay and does have feelings for his best friend Mike (Finn Wolfhard).

“Now that he’s gotten older, they made it a very real, obvious thing. Now it’s 100% clear that he is gay and he does love Mike. But before, it was a slow arc. I think it is done so beautifully because it’s so easy to make a character just like all of a sudden be gay,” Schnapp, 17, told the outlet.

Fans have been discussing Will’s potential queerness since season four of the hit Netflix show came out in May. However, when previously asked about Will’s sexuality, Schnapp told Variety that it was “up to the audience’s interpretation.”

Schnapp revealed that the series has actually been building Will’s queer storyline since the show’s beginning.

He told the outlet,

“They’ve been intentionally pulling that out over the past few seasons. Even in Season 1, they hinted at that and slowly, slowly grew that storyline. I think for Season 4, it was just me playing this character who loves his best friend but struggles with knowing if he’ll be accepted or not, and feeling like a mistake and like he doesn’t belong. Will has always felt like that. All his friends, they all have girlfriends and they all fit into their different clubs. Will has never really found anywhere to fit in. I think that’s why so many people come up to me and tell me that they love Will and they resonate with him so much, because it’s such a real character.”

In the interview, Schnapp also said that he’s hoping for a coming-out scene for Will in the next season. He said that he called up the creators of the show Matt and Ross Duffer — known as the “Duffer Brothers” — and asked what they had in store for that.

“They have a lot to get to. They’re still working it out, but they have their end goal,” Schnapp shared.

Stranger Things season four is now streaming on Netflix.
