Hilary Duff recently sat down for an interview with Bustle where she talked about her work, new and old.
This popstar is now grown, and working on a reboot of How I Met Your Mother, this time from the woman's perspective. Duff is finally excited to have creative control in How I Met Your Father, something she was denied when originally filming her breakout show, hit teen series Lizzie McGuire.
Still a teen herself when originally on set, Duff took the time to reflect on what it was like to play Lizzie at such a young age. She remarks,
“I was too young to do a character dive on Lizzie. I think I was just playing myself. And I really related to that girl. She was me, and I was her, and that was that. [...] I’ve obviously had to think about [Lizzie] a lot. The lines get so blurry between me and her, and I think they are for the world, still. And they probably always will be. I think just accepting that has brought me a lot of peace."
Despite the ups and downs, Duff still has a lot of love for the character that made her a household name. In fact, she was even working on a reboot of the show through Disney+, until she pulled out in late 2020 due to creative differences. Duff claims that they wanted to keep the series "family friendly," despite the character being all grown up. Duff feels this wouldn't have "honored" her, stating,
“I want any reboot of Lizzie to be honest and authentic to who Lizzie would be today. It’s what the character deserves. We can take a moment to mourn the amazing woman she would have been and the adventures we would have taken with her.”
While we may not see a Lizzie McGuire reboot anytime soon, fans still have a lot to look forward to. Now a producer on How I Met Your Father, Duff is involved in the writing and casting for the show. She says that her experience in the industry gives her the right to be opinionated, and is excited for this new chapter in her career.
