'The Last Of Us' Hires 'Chernobyl' Director Johan Renck For Pilot Episode

HBO has tapped Johan Renck to direct the pilot episode of the series!

In an interview with Discussing Film, Johan Renck revealed he will be directing the pilot episode of The Last Of Us. The series is based on the popular, post-apocalyptic video game.

Renck has directed episodes of Breaking Bad, Bates Motel, Bloodline, and more recently known for directing the award winning HBO series Chernobyl. In the interview, Renck and Chernobyl writerCraig Mazin announced they will be working together again on this project:

"I'm an executive producer on it and attached to it. It's an ongoing TV series. So that's not something that I will be able to take on to that extent, but I'm part of that series and I will be directing at least the pilot. Then we'll see how it goes on further."

Mazin will be writing the pilot along with writer and creator of The Last of Us video game Neil Druckmann. Along with Renck, Mazin, and Druckmann, Carolyn Strauss and Evan Wells (president of Naughty Dog) will also all serve as executive producers.

As for other details, The Hollywood Reporter shared that the series will have a live action structure and will be set to cover the events in the video game including additional content based on the highly anticipated sequel to the game. Druckmann announced over Twitter that Gustavo Santaolalla will compose the score for the series.

Mazin has promised fans that Ellie would still be a gay character.

However, the HBO series isn't set to begin production until The Last of Us Part II releases on June 19, 2020.

The Last of Us story follows 20 years after a contagious disease that took over the United States but brings Joel and Ellie together. However, they must work as a team to survive an excruciating journey.
