Fey isn't an unfamiliar face for the Broadway community as she turned her cult classic film Mean Girls into a major Broadway hit that opened at the August Wilson Theater in 2018. Casey Nicholaw directed the musical and Fey's husband Jeff Richmond wrote the music. The musical went on to become so successful it earned 12 Tony nominations.

The Broadway community especially has been affected by the ongoing pandemic. The donations made during the special will help provide groceries, medication, health care and emergency financial assistance to those affected and to those who are struggling during this difficult time. NBCUniversal will also be making a donation to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. Popular Broadway musicals like Beetlejuice, Phantom of the Opera, and Frozen ended their Broadway run and The Music Man starring Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster have been pushed to open next year.
