June 19th is marked as the day that slaves became free in the United States.

On June 19th, 1865, Major General Gorgon Granger and the Union soldiers spread the news at Galveston, Texas that the American Civil War was over and that the enslaved were free. General Granger read to the people of Texas General Order Number 3, which states:

"The people of Texas are informed that in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired laborer."

Also called Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, Juneteenth started as a Texas holiday but is now celebrated throughout the country. In honor of this important day, we're sharing which celebrities taking to social media to engage fans about the holiday.
