The new Netflix drama Bridgerton, premiering Christmas day, features a diverse cast and characters dealing with the hot scandals of the 19th century.
Lady Whistledown's Society Papers
The riveting trailer shows the members of the society being introduced to Lady Whistledown and her Society Papers. In these papers, Lady Whistledown exposes the society's scandals, however there's a twist: nobody knows who Lady Whistledown is.
In the trailer, the voice of Lady Whistledown says,
"You do not know me and never shall, but be full warned dear reader, I certainly know you."
Sound familiar? Well, many fans are comparing this new Netflix drama to the idolized CW series, Gossip Girl.
19th Century 'Gossip Girl'
Gossip Girl premiered in 2007 and still has a raging fanbase. Fans love watching the scandals of Serena (Blake Lively), Blair (Leighton Meester), Dan (Penn Badgley), Chuck (Ed Westwick), and Nate (Chace Crawford) unfold.
Compared to Gossip Girl, Bridgerton seems to not only focus around the scandals of the characters within the society, but also promote diversity in a time where diversity was not praised.
Representation Within 'Bridgerton'
The Bridgerton trailer showcases interracial couples, LGBTQ+ representation, and body positivity through the performances of a very diverse cast.
It isn't clear if these issues are going to be a major part of the theme of the series, but either way we are here for the representation and diversity Bridgerton promotes.
'Bridgerton' Cast
Starting off strong, the voice of the unknown Lady Whistledown is Genovia's own Julie Andrews, Queen Clarisse Renaldi from The Princess Diaries franchise.
Phoebe Dynevor
Phoebe Dynevor, Clare from TV Land's Younger, plays Miss Daphne Bridgerton, the main protagonist of Bridgerton, who seems to have a romantic interest in Duke Simon Basset (Rege-Jean Page) based on the trailer.
Rege-Jean Page
Rege-Jean Page, Chicken George in Roots and Leonard Knox in ABC's For The People, plays Duke Simon Basset.
Nicola Coughlan
Known for her role as Clare Devlin in Derry Girls, Coughlan will be playing Penelope Featherington.
Bessie Carter
Bessie Carter, an ensemble member of Les Miserables and Evie Wilcox in Howards End, will be playing one of the Featherington sisters, Prudence.
Ruby Barker
Ruby Barker, known for her role as Yarka in How to Stop a Recurring Dream, will be playing Marina Thompson.
Luke Newton
Luke Newton, known for his role as Ben Evans in Disney Channel's The Lodge, will be playing Colin Bridgerton.
Jonathan Bailey
Jonathan Bailey, known for his role as Jack Patterson on BBC Two's W1A, will be playing Anthony Bridgerton.
Shondaland's Bridgerton will premiere December 25, only on Netflix.
