The most influential First Ladies of the White House are finally getting their own series.
Showtime released the first trailer for their upcoming anthology, The First Lady. The show is set to follow the lives and careers of three of the most prominent women to ever grace the halls of the Oval Office, starring Viola Davis as Michelle Obama, Michelle Pfeiffer as Betty Ford, and Gillian Anderson as Eleanor Roosevelt.
The series also features Kiefer Sutherland as Franklin D. Roosevelt, Aaron Eckhart as Gerald Ford, and the Handmaid's Tale's O-T Fagbenle as Barack Obama. Guest stars include Dakota Fanning, Judy Greer, Ellen Burstyn, and Kate Mulgrew.
The trailer shows a gives a look into the lives of American icons. It shows a variety of intimate moments, including the Obamas dancing in their kitchen and the chaotic politics of Ford being thrust into office after Nixon's resignation. Each woman is shown at an instrumental moment in their career, navigating the controversies that made them so important to Americans.
Showtime promoted the show with its trailer by sharing the purpose behind it. The network stated,
“The First Lady is a revelatory reframing of American leadership, told through the lens of the women at the heart of the White House. The series will peel back the curtain on the personal and political lives of three unique, enigmatic women and their families, tracing their journeys to Washington, dipping into their pasts and following them beyond the White House into their greatest moments."
The First Lady begins streaming on Showtime April 17.
