Broadway To Reopen at 100% Capacity September 14th

Shortly after Governor Cuomo's announcement that New York will be easing COVID-19 restrictions within the next two weeks, and Mayor De Blasio planning for New York to reopen at 100% capacity starting July 1st, Broadway shows will be reopening September 1st at 100% capacity.

Why So Late?

There's a four month gap between NYC reopening and Broadway following suit. The reason for this is that casts haven't been together since the start of the pandemic. They need time to rehearse and set stages before they can reopen to the world again.

The reason Broadway hasn't been open, unlike other venues, is that it's essentially impossible to run a Broadway show with socially distanced seating. Most shows lose money even at full capacity, so it's hard to imagine a substantially smaller crowd would sustain the funds needed to keep a show going.

What's Coming Back?

Tickets are on sale now for thirty shows who all plan to either reopen in September or a later point in 2021. Some titans coming back are The Lion King, Hamilton, Book of Mormon, Aladdin, and Dear Evan Hansen. You can see the full list in the link provided, but there's lots to look forward to as we get back to normal!
