Just days into January, 2022 is proving it will not be any easier than other years. Two years into a pandemic, and people have dealt with work from home, quarantines, and one cancelled plan after the next. Though once unheard of, pushing back the release dates of blockbuster movies has become common practice. All events from rock concerts to Broadway shows are on hold, and it looks like the Grammy’s are no exception.

Just yesterday, multiple sources confirmed that the Recording Academy is considering postponing the 2022 Grammy Awards. This has left many recalling when the same news was announced one year ago—for the 2021 Grammys. Originally scheduled for the end of January, the 2021 Awards ended up being held in mid-March due to rising cases at the time.

With the Omicron variant behind a new spike in Covid-19 cases, history seems to be repeating itself for the 2022 Grammys. As of this moment, the ceremony has not been postponed, and a spokesman of the Academy insists a decision has not been made. However, the 2021 decision to postpone was announced on January 5, just weeks before the show, so the decision for 2022 should not be far away.

Sources say the show being pushed is “looking likely”, though with excitement from fans and artists alike, this is not ideal. As they did last year, the Recording Academy would most likely have to relocate to a larger venue in order to prevent crowding. There’s hesitancy in doing so, as scaling back the venue would mean losing ticket revenue. It would also require the postponement of surrounding events, such as the pre-award dinner, and the MusiCares gala.

Still, safety is the number one priority as Covid in Los Angeles breaches 15,000 new cases per day, with the rest of the country close behind. While we wait for the announcement, the rest of the world is reminded of how far from over this pandemic truly is.
