Bad Bunny is the first Latino superhero to star in a Marvel movie.

Sony announced at CinemaCon that the rapper will play the lead in their upcoming "El Muerto" movie. El Muerto, also known as Juan Carlos Estrada Sanchez, is a wrestler whose powers have been passed down in his family for generations via his mask, which gives him super strength.

In past comics, El Muerto has gotten in the ring with Spider-Man, becoming one of the few to nearly unmask the hero. Sony did not confirm whether or not the webslinger would appear in "El Muerto," but they teased that Bad Bunny will be portraying "an antihero on the verge of inheriting his father’s power."

Bad Bunny pitched the project himself, as he's been searching for a Latin "Spider-Man" character to portray. Sony has fast-tracked the project out of excitement, as well as to work around the musician's busy touring schedule. Onstage at CinemaCon, he told the crowd,

“This opportunity to bring El Muerto to life. It’s amazing, it’s incredible."

The rapper also shared that he grew up with a love of wrestling, which compelled him to take on the role. He continued,

"I love wrestling. I grew up watching wrestling and I’m a wrestler. I’m a former champion so this is why I love this character. I think it’s the perfect role to me and it will be epic.”

It's a busy year for Bad Bunny as the "El Muerto" announcement comes shortly after his winning Best Música Urbana Album for "El Último Tour Del Mundo" at the 2022 Grammy Awards. Sony also has their hands full, as other "Spider-Man" related projects are set to debut in the next few years.

The company recently announced "Madame Web," another film centered around a web-slinging character starring Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney, with Johnson as the titular character. "Madame Web" marks the first woman character from the Spider-Man universe to get her own film, with "El Muerto" marking the first Latin superhero to get their own film.

“El Muerto” will hit theaters on January 12, 2024.
