The K-Pop band BTS have been named the UN's Special Presidential Envoys for Future Generations and Culture. On September 20th, the band delivered a speech at the UN along with a pre-recorded performance of their hit "Permission To Dance."
President of the Republic of Korea, Moon Jae-In, introduced the band stating that "we must not forget that the future belongs to our future generations." This is not the first time that BTS makes a speech at the UN. The first time was in 2018 and the second in 2020, where the band had talked about their struggles with loneliness and creativity during the pandemic.
During their speech, BTS shared a question they asked fans across the world:
"What were the past 2 years like for you, and what's your world like today?"
The group had then continued stating that there should be a change of the label "lost generation," which is usually affiliated with younger generations:
"We think that instead of the 'lost generation,' a more appropriate name would be the 'welcome generation.' Instead of fearing change, this generation says, 'Welcome!' and keeps forging ahead."
The band also clarified their vaccination status in relation to the coronavirus pandemic.
"Some of you heard the news that we were coming to the UN and a lot of you were wondering whether we have been vaccinated. I'll take this opportunity to say yes, all seven of us, of course received vaccinations. The vaccination was a sort of ticket to meeting our fans waiting for us."
BTS ended their speech with a positive look towards the future:
"We believe that every choice we make is the beginning of change. We hope that in this nascent new world we can all say to each other 'Welcome!'"
The "Permission To Dance" pre-recorded video is the message that the group wants to send to future generations. Throughout the music video, the group dances inside and around the UN's building. The attention is entirely focused on them, until the very end when other dancers join them with a synchronized choreography.
BTS' participation was part of the Sustainable Development Goals program, which will take place at the beginning of the United Nation's General Assembly's High-Level Week.
