The origin story of Buzz Lightyear finally comes to the big screen---with Captain America as lead.

The characters from Pixar's hit Toy Story franchise have been in our hearts for nearly thirty years. Since the release of the first movie in 1995, audiences have long enjoyed beloved figures like Woody and Buzz Lightyear, and have craved more from them.

There aren't anymore Toy Story movies coming out, but that doesn't mean it's the end of the road for our favorites. It was recently announced that space explorer Buzz Lightyear would be getting his own origin story movie--starring Marvel's Chris Evans as the titular character.

The teaser was revealed October of 2021, showing Buzz in a form we've never seen before: human. No longer a plastic toy in Andy's bedroom, Buzz Lightyear is now an astronaut on a mission to explore the cosmos. Not much else was known, until today, when Pixar released the official trailer via Twitter.

The trailer shows Buzz as he readies himself for his mission unknown planets. He gets a cute, robot cat as a sidekick, and fights his arch nemesis, the Evil Emperor Zurg. The story will follow his journey from a regular astronaut to the heroic space avenger we know.

Director Angus MacLane said of the project in an official statement,

"My ‘Lighytear’ pitch was, ‘What was the movie that Andy saw that made him want a Buzz Lightyear toy?’ I wanted to see that movie. And now I’m lucky enough to get to make it.”

The movie will also feature Taika Waititi and Keke Palmer as supporting characters. Waititi, known for directing Thor: Ragnarok, shared the news by tweeting,

"I'm the main star of this movie but I pulled rank and said the trailer should be more about the supporting characters like @ChrisEvans"

Evans responded in a quote tweet,

"In my eyes, you’re the main star of every movie whether you’re in them or not."

He then shared the trailer from Pixar's account with the caption "To infinity..."

Lightyear will be released in theaters June 17, 2022.
