The first thing Oprah told Gayle King was that editing the 3 hour long interview had been a very difficult process. One question that needed to be answered, however, was the following: "why did they leave?"

"I think the stories about blindsiding the Queen were very damaging to them and also hurtful, because they understood very clearly that there had been months of preparation before they actually moved to Canada."

But on January 18th the Queen had made the following statement:

"Following many months of conversations and more recent discussions, I am pleased that together, we have found constructive and supportive way forward for my grandson and his family."

Oprah said that in spite of that, there were still many stories about blindsiding the Queen. King immediately added "that's why the details are important."

When asked about her thoughts on family vs institution, Oprah shared her takeaway:

"There are, as Harry indicated, people surrounding the family, who are advisors and have been there for a long time and that's part of the hierarchal structure. Those people have a lot of influence and input."

Oprah also mentioned that the reason why Harry and Markle decided to do the interview is because of the pain for hearing stories about them that don't correspond to reality for days, months, and even years.

"Before I do any interview, I have a conversation with whoever I'm interviewing and ask 'tell me what your intention is and I will tell you mine and let's see if we can align those two.'"

Oprah also talked about the, as King correctly stated, "jaw dropping moment" about the color of the baby's skin. Although everyone is wondering who the person was, Harry is still protecting the mysterious identity. But Oprah clarified who was not involved in those conversations.

"He did not share the identity with me, but he wanted to make sure that I knew, if I had the opportunity to share it, that it was not his grandmother and nor his grandfather that were part of those conversations."

Markle's father has also never met Archie, nor Harry. Although Oprah had not pursued that conversation, this is what she thinks:

"From what I've gathered her relationship with her father is similar to what's happening with Prince Harry and Prince William now: there's distance."

What came across in the interview was also that Harry was deeply hurt by his father and Oprah shared that she could feel his pain during the interview.

"What he said in the interview last night about continuing to work on mending that relationship is what he intends to do, but it is very sad."

King also complimented Oprah for making the interview with Prince Harry and Markle incredibly conversational, a fundamental skill that was necessary for the difficult topics covered.

King then asked her how she, Harry and Markle are reacting to the interview being out for the world to watch. Oprah said that Markle had texted her yesterday night, asking how it was going on the West Coast, while putting little Archie to bed.

"I'm just pleased that we were able to maintain the integrity of the interview from a 3 hour and 20 minute cut-down."

And she went on sharing a story of when she met Markle in 2018. At the time, Markle had said that "she'd been given advice that it would be best if she could be 50% less than she was." Oprah had replied "I don't know how you're going to survive being half of yourself."
