Just two weeks after R. Kelly was sentenced to thirty years in prison, it was revealed that the singer is engaged to his alleged victim Joycelyn Savage.
The R&B singer's ongoing sexual abuse trial finally came to an end after a Brooklyn jury convicted him of all nine counts brought against him. The charges included racketeering, bribery, coercion, enticement and sex trafficking, with the events spanning from 1992 all the way to 2017.
A letter addressed to the case's judge recently surfaced revealing that Kelly and his alleged victim, Joycelyn Savage, are engaged. The aspiring singer sent the note two weeks before the trial's conclusion to plead with the judge for a lighter sentence, writing,
"My name is Joycelyn Savage, and I'm Robert Kelly's fiancé. I'm writing this letter in support of Robert in advance of his sentencing, so I can explain to the court that I'm not the victim that the government has portrayed me to be."
Savage described her relationship with Kelly as "amazing," calling the star the "best thing that's ever happened to me." She continued,
"It breaks my heart that the government has created a narrative that I'm a victim. I'm a grown woman, and can speak for myself which is why I wanted to provide this letter to the court. [Kelly] is a great man, with a great heart and deserves to be home with his loved ones who are ready to support him."
Savage did not reveal how recently the engagement took place, nor if the trial played a role. Her behavior is consistent with her previous appearance on "CBS This Morning" alongside another live-in girlfriend of Kelly's, Azriel Clary, where they denied the allegations that they were held against their will.
Dozens of victims testified on behalf of the prosecution during Kelly's trial, some claiming that they were underage when groomed by the musician. Late singer Aaliyah was just fifteen in the '90s when she married Kelly, with other survivors as young as sixteen and seventeen when they met.
Before Kelly was convicted and sentenced to thirty years, prosecution claimed that he used "fame, money and popularity" to "prey upon children and young women for his own sexual gratification." Kelly faces additional charges in Minnesota, as well as in Chicago for alleged child pornography.
