One of the original cast member's of ABC's The Good Doctor Antonia Thomas, who fans have come to know and love over the past four years, is parting ways with her character Dr. Claire Browne. Thomas' last episode premiered last night in a two-part season finale where the San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital team go to Guatemala on a surgical mission.
In a candid interview with Deadline, Thomas revealed that her mind was made up to depart the show after season three before her contract was up. Thomas shared how she is looking to "explore different creative opportunities" and hinted that the U.S. broadcast orders played a factor.
At the end of season three, Thomas shared her wishes to depart the show to executive producer David Shore. Shore was understanding of her decision, and they both thought of ways on how to incorporate Dr. Claire Brown's departure into the storyline.
"I started airing my feelings that I have loved exploring Claire and would love to explore Claire for another season, but after that, how would he feel about bringing the character to a close," Thomas stated. "We talked through how we might be able to do that, and came to the decision that it was the right thing."
Thomas reflected on her airport scene with Freddie Highmore, which was shared on on The Good Doctor's Instagram.
"Filming the scene at the airport, everyone was really sad. We had such a joyous time, as well, filming these final episodes, being on the road and doing something different, and all being on the bus, Thomas shared. "It was just such a wonderful way to say goodbye to the show, so the tears came easier."
Thomas then took to her own Instagram in a heartfelt goodbye post showing appreciation for her time on the medical drama:
"It has been a privilege and pleasure to play Claire Browne and to be a part of such a wonderful show, working with such brilliant people.
