New Ridley Scott Film 'The Last Duel' in Theaters October 15th

From the director Ridley Scott of the Blade Runner and Alien franchises comes a riveting historical drama titled The Last Duel.

The Last Duel is presented by 20th Century Studios and will star Matt Damon, Adam Driver, Ben Affleck, and Jodie Comer of Killing Eve fame. The screenplay was written by Nicole Holofcener, whose previous credits include Can You Ever Forgive Me? and Enough Said, with writing credits from Affleck and Damon themselves.

Based on the Eric Jager book The Last Duel: A True Story of Crime, Scandal, and Trial by Combat in Medieval France, the film takes place in the middle ages and tells the story of Marguerite de Carrouges, a woman who is assaulted by her husband's friend who then publicly accuses her attacker, resulting in a vicious battle to the death, the last officially recognized judicial duel in France.

The film "explores the ubiquitous power of men, the frailty of justice and the strength and courage of one woman willing to stand alone in the service of truth" according to an official press release by 20th Century Studios.

"We found so many aspects of the formal, codified patriarchy of 14th century Western Europe to still be present in vestigial ways (and in some cases almost unchanged) in today's society," says Nicole Holofcener, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. "We chose to use the device of telling the story from several character's perspectives in order to examine the immutable fact that although often multiple people who experience the same event come away with differing accounts, there can only be one truth."

Originally set to be released in 2020 but delayed due to the pandemic, The Last Duel premieres in theaters October 15th, 2021.
