'Dune' Premiere Date Announced

Here's all the important details about Denis Villeneuve's adaptation.

At long last, we have a release date for Denis Villeneuve's Dune adaption. The film will debut at the 78th Venice International Film Festival on September 3, 2021.

Dune is one of the most hotly-anticipated films of the year, featuring an all-star cast that includes Timothée Chalamet (Little Women), Zendaya (Spider-Man: Homecoming), Josh Brolin (Avengers: Endgame), and Oscar Isaac (Star Wars). Villeneuve is the second director to adapt Frank Herbert's 1965 magnum opus: David Lynch wrote and directed his own version in 1984 after Alejandro Jodorowsky and Ridley Scott's attempts were unsuccessful, but his adaptation was critically panned. Now, nearly forty years later, the iconic science-fiction novel is returning to the big screen again.

Dune tells the story of the Atreides family, which accepts stewardship over a desert planet that produces "the spice", a mystical material that enhances humanity's minds and lifespans and is necessary for faster-than-light travel. Spice comes at a great price, as the planet it comes from (fittingly named "Dune") is rife with betrayal and giant sandworms. Nonetheless, when the Atreides are betrayed, they have no choice but to seek salvation in the zesty wilds of the planet.

Villeneuve has stated that his adaptation will be in two parts, though the second film has not been guaranteed by the studio yet. Aside from the sequel, a prequel spinoff series has also been announced, with Villeneuve directing the first episode. Filming for the show began in late 2020.

Dune becomes available in theaters and on HBO Max on October 1st.
