Regional Production of Fiddler On The Roof

According to Deadline.com, MGM has hired Hamilton director Thomas Kail and other theater alums to bring the story of tradition back to movie theaters.

The project has tapped Thomas Kail to direct, with a portfolio including such projects as Hamilton, Grease: Live!, Fosse/Verdon, and many other smash hits. Playwright Steven Levenson has also been asked to write the script, who is known for such works as the smash hit musical Dear Evan Hansen, which won six Tony Awards including Best Musical.

MGM Chairman Michael De Luca tells Deadline:

"MGM's nearly centuries-long legacy of great film musicals continues with the great Tommy Kail's new feature adaptation of one of Broadway's most enduring classics. Along with the formidable team of Dan, Aaron, and Steven, we are thrilled they have come aboard to steward one of the great musicals to the big screen."

Fiddler On The Roof tells the story of Tevye, a poor milkman with five daughters. The musical and 1971 film follow Tevye and his village as sacred tradition is tested, beliefs are debated, and old rules are broken.

The stage musical based on the tale Tevye and his Daughters, which ran on Broadway from 1964 to 1972 with 3,242 performances. The production was produced by Harold Prince, directed by Jerome Robbins, written by Joseph Stein, and scored by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick. The original production won 9 Tony Awards including Best Musical.

Fiddler On The Roof has had five revivals in NYC, five National Tours, and thousands of school and regional productions around the world.

There is no release date yet for the remake.
