The star is joining the fight against the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

According to reports from Monday, the Mission Impossible actor gave back his three Golden Globes to protest the award show and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. The organization has been under fire for months now with accusations about racism and its lack of diversity.

The three statuettes were reportedly sent back to HFPA headquarters. These include Cruise's Best Actor award for Jerry Maguire, the Best Actor award he won for Born on the Fourth of July, and the Best Supporting Actor award for Magnolia.

Tom Cruise is not the first star to speak out against the association. Big platforms and corporations such as Netflix have personally addressed the HFPA, stating they will not participate in the show or with the organization until it addresses and reforms their issues.

This also comes on the heels of the breaking news from earlier in the week that NBC has cancelled the 2022 broadcast of the Golden Globes. The network released a statement on Monday saying:

"We continue to believe that the HFPA is committed to meaningful reform. However, change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right. As such, NBC will not air the 2022 Golden Globes. Assuming the organization executes on its plan, we are hopeful we will be in a position to air the show in January 2023."

This came after the HFPA first came under fire in March for having little to no Black journalists as members of the board. The association claimed in a statement made in March they would make sure more Black journalists are going to join going forward:

"As a demonstration of our commitment, the board has unanimously approved a plan to increase membership to a minimum of 100 members this year, with a requirement that at least 13 percent of the membership be Black journalists."

However, this is clearly far from enough of what the public needs and the fight is still ongoing.

While Cruise is the first star to make a statement in this way by returning his trophies, some outlets speculate they would not be surprised if Cruise starts a new movement among other celebrities by doing this.
