‘West Side Story’ Star Rachel Zegler Says She Wasn’t Invited to Oscars 2022

Rachel Zegler's movie is nominated for a best picture Academy Award, but she says she'll be celebrating like the rest of us.

“West Side Story” star Rachel Zegler claims the Academy did not invite her to the 2022 Oscars despite the film receiving seven nominations.

The 20-year-old actress starred as Maria Vasquez in the musical drama "West Side Story," which won her a Golden Globe for best actress in a motion picture comedy or musical.

On Sunday, in an Instagram post on her verified account, one of her followers wrote in the comments: "Can't wait to see what you'll be wearing on Oscar night."

Zegler responded, "I'm not invited, so sweatpants and my boyfriend's flannel."

After dozens of comments came in, Zegler clarified that she did not understand the decision either but would still be cheering for the musical.

"Idk y'all, I have tried it all, but it doesn't seem to be happening :’)," she wrote in a second comment. "I will root for West Side Story from my couch and be proud of the work we so tirelessly did three years ago."

The New Jersey native, who won a Golden Globe for her role as Maria Vasquez, also thanked her fans for their "shock and outrage" over the apparent snub.

Zegler grew up starring in local musicals before making her big-screen debut in "West Side Story" opposite Ansel Elgort and Ariana DeBose, the latter of whom is nominated for Best Supporting Actress.

Nominees (Zegler is not nominated) receive tickets, as do presenters, with additional tickets given to studios to distribute as they see fit.

CNN has reached out to reps for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for comment.

The 94th Oscars will be held on Sunday at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood and televised live on ABC.
